Best Review Ever for JACK WAKES UP!

The DIY Author Returneth (Again)

Pat Holt, who is now my favorite reviewer, bar none, has just written up the third post in her series about DIY authorship and my own road in particular. This post also includes mentions of JA Konrath, JC Hutchins and newbie Erin O'Briant.

Pat's main point here is that things are changing, but she also talks about how it still comes back to the writing, its quality. That's where this piece gets special for me. Here's what Pat has to say about JACK WAKES UP:

“Jack Wakes Up,” which begins a series of books (Seth’s already written three), is both a refreshing crime novel and a witty look at 21st century existential angst through its title character, a charming wiseacre/former actor/reluctant sleuth named Jack Palms.

True, everything about this original paperback looks like a flashy postmodern Chandler spinoff that fans of paperback detective fiction might pick up for a good airplane read, something fun and quick.

But that’s just the page-turner part.     (READ MORE...)

Air and Light and Time and Space

I used to have this Bukowksi poem up on the wall by my desk. Lately I've been thinking about it as I push myself back into the JP2 revisions. I'm not sure how I feel about the poem anymore, but it's always stuck with me. Either because it's bullshit bravado or because I believe in it. What do you think?

air and light and time and space

"–you know, I’ve either had a family, a job,
something has always been in the
way
but now
I’ve sold my house, I’ve found this
place, a large studio, you should see the space and
the light.
for the first time in my life I’m going to have
a place and the time to
create."

no baby, if you’re going to create
you’re going to create whether you work
16 hours a day in a coal mine
or
you’re going to create in a small room with 3 children
while you’re on
welfare,
you’re going to create with part of your mind and your body blown
away,
you’re going to create blind
crippled
demented,
you’re going to create with a cat crawling up your
back while
the whole city trembles in earthquake, bombardment,
flood and fire.

baby, air and light and time and space
have nothing to do with it
and don’t create anything
except maybe a longer life to find
new excuses
for.

Berkeley Mystery Writing Intensive, YA Bumpkins!!

So what's up--what's up? I'm about to get into an interview with my good friend Cornelia Read where she's going to tell you about an awesome Mystery Writing Intensive Workshop here in the Berkeley on the weekend of Nov. 21 and 22. Check out more info here: http://www.berkeleymysteryworkshop.com/Home.html Boo Yah! Just like that.

Now here I am sitting down with Cornelia to talk it all out:

Q&A for Berkeley Mystery Writing Intensive

Q: So, tell me a little bit about this workshop. Who’s going to be on the faculty?

A: First and foremost, the inimitably sublime author Seth Harwood, of course—he of the podcasting brilliance and downright-goddamn-genius prose. Young Mr. Harwood will be joined by a select tribe of the Bay Area’s finest crime writers, including Juliet Blackwell, Tony Broadbent, Sophie Littlefield, and Tim Maleeny.

Q: And you, right?

A: And me, though I wouldn’t feel comfortable describing myself qualitatively as a writer. I mainly just type and hope for the best.

Q: You the bomb, girl! Straight up! You’re also flying two folks out from New York to present.

To answer a listener's question on the blog

Why am I putting my work out as free audio content?

Basically, I'm a young author and I'm trying to build my name in the business. I've been giving my work away for three years now for people to enjoy it. This relationship and fan base has directly helped me land a publishing contract with Random House for my first novel, JACK WAKES UP, which came out in May.

Generally speaking, if folks know and like my work, I'm betting they'll spread the word and it'll lead to book sales, a career, etc. Seems to be working so far!

New Fan

Hi Seth, See if you can follow the bouncing ball here...I'm Paul Capozza, Jason Barrios's brother in law. I'm married to Kari's sister Shana. Anyways, I was visiting Colorado over the summer and Kari gave me your book. I finally found time to read it and just finished it up the other night. Right up my alley! Really good read!! I read alot of action/mystery books. Clive Cussler, Harlan Coben, Carl Hiaasen to name a few. And JWU is right there with them. Really entertaining. Well I just thought I'd introduce myself and let you know I'm looking forward to more. I don't have much time to listen to books on tape/ipod so I will be anxiously waiting for a print version of JP2 and JP3. Take care, Paul My best to Joelle, been 20 years since I've seen her at J & K's wedding.
