Does Elf Live
Sun, 09/21/2008 - 16:06
Ok, just curious... I don't think Elf makes it out of the story alive. Somebody got to die, and I don't think its going to be his mom, so my #1 choice is Elf
Anyone else?

Does Elf Live
Yeah, I say he's a goner. Junius already says he thinks about things too much in a fight, so that's a red flag. It'll be a sad scene though.

Hah, I got foiler'd!
So, I saw this headline on the side of the website with the title of this thread, and I thought it was a reaction to this week, like that Elf got shot but not dead or something. Then I listened and at the end was glad to realize that wasn't what this thread was about. I'd hate to learn that ahead of time.
That said, yeah, I'm speculating the same thing. Hate to say it, but if someone's going to go, it's probably going to be Elf. And some of us...

naw
At this point the best reason for him to become the older Junius that we know is if his Mom gets kacked.
Remember, he left the gun in his mom's house. I think it's a dead giveaway that he'll be back, and madder than hell. But only time will tell

Nice shot
Yeah, there has to be a big stressor for him to become the "No-holds-barred" gangster we all came to love in JP1. If his Mom did live there's no way he'd become the coke dealing Junius. His Mom would be on the first Greyhound from Boston to Cali to slap him upside the head.
I still say Elf buys it, but so does Ma.

Perhaps, perhaps
You know, I think I might agree with the mom thing. But I really don't know. Maybe Seth's got some sort of big surprise waiting that none of us would ever expect. After all, he's pulled some crazy shit, like what happened to a certain apparently dead character from JP2 who showed up in JP3...

Forgot to mention...
You know, that reminds me that I totally forgot to mention that I totally think Gail Ponds Posey would make an excellent name for a rock band. I call it!

nathaniel's band name idea
How about "The Ponds Posse"? =) That sounds pretty (dare I say it?) gangsta.

Also cool
I feel like Gail Ponds Posey would be some sort of rock or otherwise band heavily influenced by Seth's work. The Ponds Posse would probably be a rap group, at least as I'm reading it. Dammit, now I need to go get actual talent so these bands can exist!

Whew, me too! I hate to be spoiled - I'm not the type that reads the endings of books or wants to know *anything* about say, what happens on my fave TV shows or anything. And I still haven't quite had the time to finish this latest ep - I just have a little bit of the ending to go - but I will finish it before the next one comes out.
But speculation is a whole 'nother thing. :D I must admit that I too, have been wondering if/when someone close to Junius is going to buy it.
And I agree with you Nathaniel - Gail Ponds Posey would be a cool name for a rock band! I noticed how well it rolled off the tongue when Seth let me do one of the 'Stories So Far', but didn't think of the band name angle.
And Btw - if you ever need me again for a 'Story So Far' Seth, just let me know - even if it's rather last minute. I had fun with that one & your editing made it sound even better (& now *I* know better!). I know it's probably lots nicer to have someone do it that's more 'known' though, and not just a fan.
Later all! Rachel

Yeah, I hate to get spoiled
Yeah, I hate to get spoiled too (about anything at all! If I'm watching it or listening to it or reading it ... then I don't want to know anything in advance; I want to experience it). It can be hard avoiding spoilers so I appreciate that this thread is speculation, not spoilers. =)

Elf
I think Pooky should show up and bust a cap in his little ass.

Pooky Chang?
Pooky Chang? That dude would get served up, not by Elf, but by the extensive posse-deep that would roll up all over Pookie's back as soon as he popped anybody.Word. Badge or none.

Young Palms...
Where the hell is JP from originally? I might have missed it, but I don't think I have heard much from the pre-Shake 'Em Down days.
I always had the impression JP was in his mid-30's when he awoke, so would that make him 15 or so in '85, rough math here. So early high school, I would say a pitcher and QB, decent student with common sense but not too big into hitting the books. Clearly a ladies’ man, but with the ease he has later in life, he has to be around some shady dudes early on or fell upon some rough times prior to hitting the big time. Maybe he's from the mid-west.
If some of this has been mentioned and I’m just forgetful, I apologize. I guess I'll have to reread JWU in the spring. Maybe I'll get multiple copies so I can read it more than once.
How about collaboration with the FDO? So as I understand things, Pookie is supposed to die. That being the case, there is a relative by the same name in The Rookie. JP and Pookie, coming of age in Chicago. Two ladies men, who screw things up and need to leave for the left coast. JP injures his shoulder and loses his scholarship and goes to La-La land to find his fame. Pookie knocks up the wrong married woman and has to leave for SF to restart. Their adventures tearing ass west, young stallions roaming toward uncertainty and possibility – I see booze, babes and belligerent encounters.
I still want to know what happened with JP and the Czechs on the road - "Czeching Out America"?

I think "Czeching Out
I think "Czeching Out America" might not really fit into the Palms noir style. =) I mean, it's already been referred to as pretty much a chilling-out road-trip thing, so it's not going to be fast-paced crime noir intrigue.
As for JP/Pookie origins story ... hm. I don't know if it would work. Ok, scratch that, I guess if it rang true to Seth and Scott, they'd make it rock if they did it.

I'm thinking Elf may not live
I'm thinking Elf may not live through the story. I sort of feel that by the end, Junius will have lost friend. It only seems fitting to me.

Loss is loss no matter how you cut it
I'm of the belief that no one has to die. I think young Juni's going to walk away from his friend Elf as well as his mother Gail. I think there is a whole subtext in this novel about loss. Loss of Temple opens the novel, everything from Jun's childhood is drifting away from him from his virginity to his first kill. In some ways we are witnessing the loss of Jun's conscience, his humanity. Killing off any of the people closest to Jun will have little meaning compared to the losses he racks up becoming a man.

J's changes
Hmmm... very interesting points! I like this dialogue. Good stuff.
He's losing his innocence. That's for sure!

Losing innocence
Careful, you don't need to lose a loved one to lose your innocence - however - he's already lost his brother.
Murdered brother and he's already killed at least one person, sounds like he's on his way already.
