IMG_0102Here’s the update. It’s me talking into the box you see at left. You can listen here at Patreon.
In this update I talk about what I’ve been doing here, writing and otherwise, the time constraints and technical challenges of a real writer in the world, and what I’m shooting for and gearing up toward regarding new content for everybody’s ears.
So I’m doing my damnedest and will have more free content for you all soon. Thanks for your support, for listening, for reading, all of it. I’m figuring things out.
I also ask a number of questions over on the Patreon page here and would love your responses, thoughts, feedback. Yours, SH

Book Release – Harley Mazuk

I recently started reading a book by one of my former students, Harley Mazuk, and had to come right here to crow about it. It’s that good!
75464-whitefish_redmurder2brgbWhite with Fish, Red with Murder may be a long, funky title, but the book is the best of the best. This is a true throwback to pre-WWII crime novels in the veins of Hammett, Chandler, and James M. Cain. Dynamite stuff that I’m having a great time reading!
It is an atmospheric tale about greed, lust, deceit—and murder–that’s set against the backdrop of 1948 San Francisco and nearby wine country. It stars Frank Swiver, a down-and-out private eye with a taste for wine and women. Fine women! And fine wine! Harley nails it all here, even mid-century SF like a long-time resident.
Frank Swiver has been Harley’s recurring series character ever since his first private eye story, “The Tall Blonde with the Hot Boiler,” published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine (Jan. 2011.) EQMM has subsequently published three more of his stories. He has sold longer fiction to Dead Guns Press and Dark Passages.
White with Fish, Red with Murder was just released on Feb 28th from Driven Press. This is definitely a book to check out. Trust me! I’ve been watching Harley for a number of years now, ever since he showed up in one of my online classes at Stanford Continuing Studies with chops to beat the band. This is his first published novel, and I couldn’t be happier to see him getting the success he’s due!
So check out the book, Harley’s blog “From the Spitbucket”–a great catalogue of front-lines writing experience I know you’ll like, and when you send him a note, tell him your boy sent ya!

Audio Promo

Now that I’m BACK, it makes sense that I’d start spreading the word. Well, first off pal Mike Bennett dropped this promo onto his latest episode of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. That’s right, he’s reading from the good old book! And doing a damn good job of it, too!
He spread this promo:
See what you think, rejoice in the streets and come over to my new Patreon page if you want more goodies, including eBook versions of a new story featuring Snake Eyes from G.I. JOE and an oddly-named head of the Sinaloa Cartel. Ever heard of El Chapo? Well, this one is for you!

Patreon is Live / Why Patreon?

screen-shot-2017-02-17-at-2-34-01-pmFirst, my Patreon page is now live! You can head over to see it here: patreon.com/sethharwood
What does this mean for you? Well, first it means new audio content! More stuff for your ears in the way of stories, podcast-novels, and more awesome chit-chat about the writing life, being a dad, and publishing as a whole. And soon: MORE JACK PALMS! (cue the music)

The big thing that was missing from podcasting when I did it in the past was a way of monetizing the audiobooks I was putting out. Basically the plan was to get big enough so a publisher (or publishers) would monetize my content by selling it as books. And thanks to your help, I did that!
But guess what: the BOOK publishing industry is in any number of degrees of flux/change/peril, depending on whom you ask. It’s not necessarily the most stable ship to put yourself into these days. Trust me, I’ve crossed a few oceans now.
Lately, I made the decision that I have to do work that I get paid for. I have a family now. We bought a house. Hence a new idea: that perhaps it was time to quit writing.
“But you’ve had so much success!” you say, or “But I want you to keep doing what you do!”
And I want those things too. Of course bills need to be paid. I have to spend time on work that pays. Then I realized: maybe it’s the BOOKS part that’s tied up in trouble, not the writing part. I thought back to all the fun we had when I was podcasting–that feeling of being connected right to you, an audience, and the rush of putting out content regularly to people who wanted it.
What I’ve come to realize this year from great authors like Mike Bennett and Stant Litore is that Patreon is a way to monetize the content that people really want: AUDIO fiction, MP3s, podcasts. Media that comes to you instead of waiting for you to seek it out, buy it, and find time to sit down with it in solitude and Quality Time, as books invariably do. Let’s face it: our lives are changing. We spend more time with our earbuds and less time curled up with a good book. It’s just a fact.
Will I give up the written word? NO! But it’s high time to make some changes around here.
Thus, Patreon and a subscription model of bringing back all the great serialized novel podcasts that you used to love!
Some of you will remember back in 2011 when I did this successful  Kickstarter Project to publish JACK PALMS II: THIS IS LIFERemember that? It was awesome, it worked, and it did something great for us both: helped me get a book out, make some money, and gave fans an awesome way to contribute to what I was making, get involved in the process, and buys books. The downside: it took a lot of work and wasn’t sustainable. It was a one-time thing. Enter Patreon, again!

Patreon allows me to set up a SUBSCRIPTION model to give you content regularly. Thus, you’re able to become a regularly-scheduled Patron of my work. For a small amount each month, depending on what rewards you want and what you can afford, I can continue to write the fiction I want to write while you get to hear the awesome crime-fiction podcasts that you remember from our days as a Palms Family. Remember those? Yeah, good times!
Patreon is a form of funding artists as a group. Basically it’s subscription-based, sustainable Crowd-Funding. Hooray!!!
So come on over to my Patreon page, check out the awesome graphics that homie Mike Farley did, and see what level of rewards might be exciting or enticing for you.
I’ll be back soon with a video to explain, more audio, and plenty of goodies for your ears and eyeballs. Want a new RSS? No problem. Patreon is your place for it. Go have a look. I’ll see you there.

Your boy,

Seth Harwood

Study with Seth @ LitReactor

Have you wanted to study with me in the past but been put off by the high price tags and fancy reputation of Stanford and Harvard? Well, now’s the time and here’s the way to come study with me for four weeks in March via the site LitReactor.
Check out the site and class’s page, think it over, and let me know if you have questions.
Here’s the full course description:
You know the feeling when the sense of reading falls away, and you find yourself completely immersed in a book’s action? Seth Harwood is here to teach you how to do just that: Engage.
You’ll learn how to write the kinds of books that connect with the reader so strongly, the act of reading falls away and they find themselves immersed in a book’s action, tied to the narrator’s struggle, watching each scene unfold in their mind’s eye.
The first and possibly most surprising lesson: You don’t need a fascinating, multi-layered outline or a stellar plot concept to write like this. Instead you’ll look at how writers and readers connect, building the craft elements necessary to pull readers in and keep them turning the pages.
Students will develop work through exercises in the use of dialogue, visual action, and creating three-dimensional characters in scenes, examining the books of writers like Michael Connelly, Stacey Richter, and Jim Thompson, as well as craft essays by Stephen King and Frank Conroy. You’ll learn from your predecessors while building a vocabulary of analytical tools.
Come on and check it out!

Upcoming Release by Harley Mazuk

Today I’m excited to announce that one of my former students, Harley Mazuk, has his FIRST NOVEL coming out in January from Driven Press! Harley’s stories have been published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and elsewhere. He’s been working damn hard at this craft and the book will be a dynamite read. Join me in congratulating him today as the book’s cover is revealed:

White with Fish, Red with Murder

Fans of Harley’s writing will already recognize private dick Frank Swiver from several short stories published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine.  In this, his first full-length story, Frank is caught between his two great loves—wine and womenwhile on the clock to solve a case.

San Francisco, 1948.
Frank Swiver is a down and out private eye with a taste for wine and women, not necessarily in that order. Frank readily accepts an unexpected job offer from well-known wine connoisseur General Lloyd F. Thursby to find the murderer of his very good friend, Rusty O’Callaghan. Invited to attend an exclusive wine tasting on Thursby’s private rail car, Frank takes along his secretary-come-lover Vera Peregrino to complete his cover. Thursby entices his guests with the promise of a taste of a rare California wine: the Ravensridge Blackbird Noir.
All does not go to plan, though, when General Thursby is murdered before the wine tasting has even begun. Frank is caught up in the allure of his former lover, Cicilia, who also happens to be the dead Rusty O’Callaghan’s widow. Locked into the private carriage until the passengers reach their destination, the guests proceed to pull some corks and theorize who among them could be the killer.
When Vera is arrested for Thursby’s murder, Frank must change his perceptions and find the real killer, or lose both Cici and Vera . . . and maybe even his life.
White with Fish, Red with Murder will be available for pre-order soon.
Stay tuned!
Harley Mazuk was born in Cleveland, the last year the Indians won the world series. After growing up in Shaker Heights, he attended Hiram College and spent his junior year at Elphinstone College, Bombay University.
